BMore Unified Tenants is a tenant-led organization fighting for peaceful homes, fair treatment, and freedom from harassment and retaliation.
We are tenants of Leasing Baltimore, LLC, and we organize to demand affordable and stable rent, transparent policies, dignified treatment, prompt and adequate maintenance, and safe homes that meet all housing codes.
We believe housing is a human right — and we know that together, Baltimore tenants are stronger.
KNOW YOUR RIGHTS:
Flyers are free to print and distribute.
In Baltimore City, retaliation against tenants is illegal. It's time we hold landlords accountable.
A landlord cannot evict a tenant, increase the rent, or decrease any of the tenant’s entitled services for any of the following reasons:
Only because tenant complained in good faith to the landlord or to a public agency concerning the tenant's rights or concerning a housing deficiency;
Only because tenant is a member of a tenants' organization;
Only because tenant filed suit against the landlord; or
Only because tenant consulted a lawyer on a matter involving the tenant's rights.
What are your options after you have been retaliated against?
A tenant may respond to a landlord’s retaliatory action in one of 2 ways:
By raising the retaliation as a defense against the landlord’s court action to evict the tenant, or
By filing a court claim seeking monetary compensation for damages resulting from the landlord’s retaliatory action.
If a court decides that the landlord committed a prohibited retaliatory action, then that court may order the landlord to pay compensation of an amount of money equivalent to as much as three months of rent, plus reasonable attorney fees and court costs.
